Career Compass helps you explore possible careers, businesses and side hustles. This page explains how information is handled when you use the free service.
Information you provide
You can answer questions about your interests, hobbies, strengths, work preferences and goals. Free-text answers may contain personal information, so please do not include names, addresses, contact details, medical information or other sensitive information.
AI-generated recommendations
When you request career suggestions or more detailed guidance, the questionnaire answers and relevant career context are sent from your browser to the Career Compass website server, which sends a request to OpenAI's API to generate a response. This is separate from any information saved on your device. Please do not enter information about other people.
Saving on your device
If you choose “Save on this device”, your questionnaire answers, results, favourites, plans and progress are stored in this browser's local storage. Some feedback and checklist choices are also stored locally. This information is not automatically synchronised to another device. My dashboard lets you download a backup, restore it or clear locally saved data. Anyone with access to this browser or an exported backup may be able to read it.
Accounts and payments
Online account registration and payments are not available in the current free version. Future features shown in the service are previews only.
Cookies and website services
The free questionnaire does not itself require advertising or analytics cookies. Technical services provided by the hosting platform may process connection information, such as IP addresses and request logs. Cookie and hosting arrangements must be checked against the live deployment.
Retention and international processing
Data stored in your browser remains there until you clear it, or your browser removes it. AI requests are processed through the website server and OpenAI's API. The operator is completing verification of server logs, provider retention, international transfers and applicable safeguards. These details must be confirmed before public launch.
Your privacy rights
Depending on the circumstances, UK data protection law gives you rights relating to your personal information, including access, correction, erasure and objection. For browser-only information, use the clear-data function in My dashboard. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
